Denmark Defeated by England after extra time to reach Euro final for the first time

England defeated Denmark 2-1 after extra time in Euro 2020 semi-final to reach Euro final for the first time. Denmark forward Mikkel Damsgaard opened the scoring in 30th minute before England equalized after a 39th-minute own goal by Danish defender Simon Kjær. England captain Harry Kane scored the winner in 104th minute by scoring a rebound after a saved penalty.

In the second semi-final, England will lock horns with Denmark at Wembley Stadium on July 8 (India time). The winner of second semi-final will square off with Italy, who defeated Spain in the first semi-final on Wednesday in penalty shootout after the match ended in a 1-1 draw at extra time.

For England, a win in the semifinal clash against Denmark tonight will lead to their first major international final in 55 years. The nation that is credited for giving the beautiful game to the world has so far just won one major trophy — a World Cup title in 1966. Denmark too has just one major international title — an European cup in 1992.

What else is at stake for England and Denmark? Let’s find out.

England will be playing in front of its home crowd at the Wembley Stadium in London. If they win against Denmark, a massive crowd of 60,000 will be attending the final, majority of them being English, waiting for it to come home.

A win against Denmark could help England get its hands on a second major international title and its first European title. However, their performances in semi-finals in major tournaments in the past are not much to take inspiration from.

The three lions have played a total of 5 semi-finals out of which the team managed to win just once during the 1966 World Cup. The last semi-final appearance in the European Championship came in 1996 when England was the host. The team played against Germany at the Wembley Stadium and lost on penalties. A penalty miss by the current manager Gareth Southgate as a player in the Euro 1996 led to their defeat. Southgate will hope to have a different outcome this time. England’s most recent appearance in a semi-final came in the 2018 World Cup in Russia when they lost out to Croatia.

England’s road to the semi-final

England started as a big favorite in the tournament. They won their first group match against Croatia 1-0 and then drew the second match against their old rivals Scotland. In the third match, England defeated Czech Republic 1-0 to top the group. Although initially there was a concern that strikers, especially Harry Kane, were not performing up to their standards, they soon dispelled all doubts. England defeated Germany 2-0 in the round of 16 and made its intention about the tournament loud and clear. In the quarterfinals against Ukraine, the three lions registered their biggest victory in the Euro cup with a 4-0 win. It was also their first four-goal haul since the 1966 World Cup final. On their way to the semi-final, England are the only team yet to concede a goal in Euro 2020. They have demonstrated that they are strong on both ends of the pitch.

England vs Denmark head-to-head

The two teams have met a total of 21 times and out of them the English side has registered victories in 12. Denmark could manage just 4 wins. However, the last meeting between the two sides came in the UEFA Nations League and ended in Denmark’s favor.

Denmark national football team

Denmark has been the dark horse of the tournament. They have surprised everyone with their performance. Although losing in the semi-final against England won’t be a failure, the team would still want to repeat the result from their previous meeting.

A win against England will see the Danes return to the final after a gap of 29 years, the longest in the tournament’s history. Denmark are the underdogs against the three lions. However, if they manage to beat England on Thursday and Italy on Monday (Indian time), the underdogs won’t be considered underdogs anymore. Before the 1992 Euro final, Denmark had twice reached the semis.

Denmark’s road to the semi-final

Out of the four semi-finalists, Denmark had the worst possible start to their campaign. Christian Eriksen had to be hospitalised after he fainted because of cardiac arrest during the opening match against Finland. The team lost the match 1-0 and then suffered another defeat against Belgium. A 4-1 win against Russia helped the team finish as runners-up in the group. In the round of 16 clash against Wales, the team continued its performance with a 4-0 win. In the quarterfinal, the team fought a tight match to get a 2-1 win over Czech Republic. The team scored a total of 11 goals on their way to the semi-final, a national record in European campaigns.

In the 1992 Euro final, the team defeated Germany 2-0. Can they spring another surprise on Thursday? We have to wait till 2:30 am (IST) to know.

Sees red as Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus outclass AC Milan, 'We're not robots': Gonzalo Higuain misses penalty,

Milan: On-loan AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain apologised for his meltdown in the 2-0 defeat to his parent club Juventus on Sunday which saw him sent off for screaming at the referee after earlier missing a penalty. Argentine Higuain had shrugged off a back injury to take on his former teammates after being loaned to AC Milan last summer to make space for the arrival of Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. But tensions boiled over as AC Milan struggled to find a way past the reigning seven-time champions.
AC Milan Vs Juventus

Higuain was sent off after 83 minutes, two minutes after Ronaldo, the player who took his place in Turin on a 100-million-euro ($115m) deal, fired in his eighth league goal in 12 matches since arriving from Real Madrid. Higuain saw red after screaming at referee Paolo Mazzoleni in protest at a yellow card for a foul on Medhi Benatia. "I know that we are an example for all children, for those who play football, for the people watching, but we are not robots, and we carry things within us," Higuain said after.

@Cristiano sealing the win!!! #MilanJuve#FinoAllaFine#ForzaJuvepic.twitter.com/Lm1AKA0UAo

— JuventusFC (@juventusfcen) November 11, 2018

"We are human, we feel emotions, the game was not going the right way and it was one of those days. "I think sometimes the referees should understand the situation," added Higuain, who won two Serie A titles with Juventus after joining from Napoli in 2016. The 30-year-old was loaned to AC Milan with a 36-million-euro option to buy with defender Leonardo Bonucci moving the other way. He has scored five goals for Milan but could not get one past his former club, for whom he scored 16 goals in the league last season.

- 'Emotion can get to you' -
Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic headed in the opener in the eighth minute at the San Siro, before Higuain failed to convert his 40th-minute chance from the spot after a Benatia handball. Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny tipped the ball onto the post. "Had I scored, the game would have changed," said Higuain.

"Now we have to look ahead, we will have two weeks of rest and then face Lazio for fourth place." AC Milan's third loss his season saw them drop out of the Champions League places into fifth behind Lazio who moved back into fourth despite a 1-1 draw at Sassuolo.

Coach Gennaro Gattuso conceded his side were no match for Juventus who bounced back from their Champions League defeat to Manchester United to maintain their six-point advantage ahead of ahead of Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli. Inter Milan drop to third a further three behind after losing 4-1 at Atalanta.

"Juventus have shown they have something more than us," said Gattuso. "Right now, he (Higuain) feels a huge weight on his shoulders and it shows. "He missed the penalty against his former team, sometimes the emotion can get to you. He must calm down, apologise and assume his responsibilities. "He's our most important player and he has to make the difference. He has to be clear headed".

After Beating England, Croatia Becomes Lowest-Ranked Team To Reach Final: FIFA World Cup 2018

Moscow: Croatia began preparations for the first World Cup final in their history on Thursday after they came from behind to crush England's hopes in an enthralling contest.

The Balkan nation of just four million people will play France on Sunday after Mario Mandzukic's extra-time winner in Wednesday's semi-final prolonged England's 52-year wait to reach a second World Cup final.

England roared into the lead in just the fifth minute through Kieran Trippier's superb free-kick, but Croatia hit back through Ivan Perisic and Mandzukic to win 2-1 in front of 78,000 spectators in the Luzhniki Stadium.

In beating Gareth Southgate's young team, Croatia have surpassed the achievements of the heroes of 1998, when they reached the semi-finals in France in their first World Cup as an independent nation.

Not only did they reach the final of the masterpiece tournament for the first –ever time, but also they became the smallest nation in terms of population to reach the final since Uruguay in 1950.

While Croatia currently have a population of 4.17 million, Uruguay had a population of 2.4 million people when they won the trophy back in 1950.

To add to that, Croatia became the lowest-ranked team ever to reach the summit clash of football’s biggest event.

A 20th ranked Croatia will take on 7th-ranked France in the final at Moscow on Sunday, whereas England play group rivals Belgium in the third-place playoff on Saturday.

FIFA World Cup 2018: First time since 1990, England blank Sweden, enter semi-finals

Harry Maguire and Dele Alli scored headers as England booked their place in a first World Cup semi-final since 1990 by beating Sweden 2-0.

Maguire and Alli struck either side of half-time in Samara on Saturday to move the Three Lions into the last four, and they will face either Croatia or hosts Russia on Wednesday.

England dominated after making a slow start, Maguire scoring from Ashley Young’s left-wing corner after half an hour to put Gareth Southgate’s side on track.

Jordan Pickford made tremendous saves to deny Marcus Berg and Viktor Claesson either side of Alli doubling England’s lead, the midfielder nodding in Jesse Lingard’s centre.

Although the World Cup’s top scorer Harry Kane was muted, England held Sweden at bay to follow up their penalty success against Colombia with a more comfortable victory.

Sweden had advanced from three of their four previous World Cup quarter-finals but could not find a way to beat Pickford as the Three Lions marched on to the semis.

Claesson hammered the game’s first shot over the crossbar in the 12th minute as a cagey start saw both sides play loose passes due to early nerves.

Raheem Sterling then set up Golden Boot leader Kane, who slotted wide, with England - playing in their first World Cup quarter-final since 2006 - starting to find their feet.

And they took the lead in the 30th minute with their eighth set-piece goal of the tournament.

Young’s outswinging corner found Maguire to power home his first international goal, goalkeeper Robin Olsen and Ola Toivonen on the line unable to stop the defender’s downward header.

The offside flag spared Sterling’s blushes when Kieran Trippier’s long-range pass sent him clear to miss and the forward soon wasted another chance from Jordan Henderson’s lofted throughball.

Olsen did well initially with a strong hand to deny Sterling, who dallied with the rebound and allowed Andreas Granqvist to make a vital block.

Pickford was called into action for the first time shortly after the restart, diving to his left to superbly palm away a header from Berg, who climbed above Young at the back post.

The importance of that terrific save was made clearer as England struck again in the 58th minute.

Another England set-piece caused chaos and, although Sweden initially cleared their lines when Lingard delivered a perfect cross to the back post, Alli was there to double his side’s advantage.

Pickford made a smart stop from Claesson after he combined well with Berg, Sweden coach Janne Andersson turning to John Guidetti from the bench.

Guidetti teed up strike partner Berg in the 71st minute but Pickford, who kept his first clean sheet of the World Cup, tipped the effort over the crossbar.

Such was England’s comfort in the closing stages, Henderson - at risk of missing the semi-final through suspension - could be replaced by Eric Dier as Southgate’s side moved on to Moscow.
