After 18 months of the ban, Sharapova will play for the first time in any Grand Slam tournaments. The American Tennis Association (USTA) has been informed about this.
According to a report by the news agency EFE, the USTA said in its statement, "Sharapova played the tournament before joining the main draw of the American Open 10 times earlier, last year she had lost to Caroline Wozniacki in the last 16 years."
After losing to Serena Williams at the Australian Open last year, Sharapova, did not get a chance to prepare for the Grand Slam tournament. Currently, she is ranked 148th in the world ranking.
The five-time Grand Slam tournament champion Sharapova was banned from the tennis world for 15 months in the doping case.
She was not allowed to enter the wild card this year at the French Open and due to injury, she was out of the Wimbledon qualifying round. The start of the American Open Tennis Tournament is scheduled for August 28.
